Haemorrhoid Treatment During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, the body has more blood circulating through its veins. The veins, especially those below the uterus, become dilated. And as the uterus grows, it also puts pressure on the pelvic veins and the inferior vena cava, the large vein on the right side of the body that receives blood from the lower limbs. This slows the return of blood from the lower half of the body, which in turn increases the pressure on the veins below the uterus. The result is the veins become more dilated or swollen, which commonly results in hemorrhoids.

Another common problem during pregnancy is constipation. Constipation can also cause or aggravate hemorrhoids because the straining to pass harder stools. In addition, an increase in the hormone progesterone during pregnancy not only causes the walls of the veins to relax, allowing them to swell more easily, progesterone also contributes to constipation by slowing down the intestinal tract.
